The first thing that stood out to me was how much character the lens adds to everyday scenes. The fisheye perspective is dramatic without feeling difficult to control, and moving between the wider and longer end gives me noticeably different looks. It has become a fun option whenever I want something outside the usual perspective.
Build quality feels reassuring in the hand, with the solid construction I expect from a professional Canon lens. The zoom ring turns with a nice amount of resistance, and the controls are easy to reach without having to shift my grip much. It feels durable enough for regular use while still being manageable to carry around.
Focus acquisition has been quick and dependable for me, particularly when photographing moving subjects at closer distances. Manual focusing is also straightforward when I want to take more control. At f/4, I have found it useful indoors as well, although I tend to pay more attention to available light compared with faster lenses.
The widest setting produces dramatic curved lines and an expansive field of view, while the longer setting gives me a little more flexibility when I do not want quite as much distortion. I have enjoyed experimenting with architecture, landscapes, creative portraits, and unusual angles. That variety keeps me reaching for it when a conventional lens feels predictable.
There is a learning curve with fisheye photography, mainly because small changes in camera position can have a big effect on the final composition. Once I started paying closer attention to edges and perspective, I began getting much more intentional results. Video use has been enjoyable too, especially for scenes where a strong sense of space adds something to the footage.
Having spent time with it, I appreciate how different it feels from the other lenses in my bag. It is not the lens I would choose for every situation, but when I want an unmistakably wide, creative perspective, it gives me plenty to explore. The sturdy construction, reliable focusing, useful zoom range, and distinctive rendering have made it a rewarding addition to my kit.
