The biggest difference I noticed when switching to this lens was how much freedom I had to shoot in changing light without constantly reaching for another piece of gear. I can frame a wider scene, move in for a portrait, or capture details from a little farther away, all while keeping the same perspective and feel throughout a session. The constant f/2 aperture has been especially useful indoors, where available light can be limited and I prefer to avoid raising ISO more than necessary.
Portraits are where it has impressed me most. Subjects stand out naturally against the background, with pleasing separation and plenty of detail across the frame. Colors look rich without feeling overdone, and the rendering gives my photos a polished appearance without requiring much editing. Focus is quick and quiet, which helps when photographing people who are moving around or capturing candid moments without drawing attention to the camera.
There is no getting around the weight, though. Mounted on my camera, the setup feels substantial, and I notice it during long walks or extended events. The zoom and focus rings feel well made, with a reassuring amount of resistance, and the lens has the solid construction I expect from professional equipment. Despite its size, I appreciate being able to cover several useful focal lengths without changing lenses in the middle of a session.
For weddings, family gatherings, portraits, and everyday professional assignments, it has become a dependable option when I want consistent results across different situations. The price and weight make it a deliberate purchase rather than an easy choice for everyone, but the combination of low-light capability, flexible framing, and pleasing background separation suits my needs extremely well. I'd choose it again for the type of photography I do most often.
