Nighttime city scenes are where I have come to appreciate this lens the most. The wide perspective captures streets, tall buildings, and surrounding details without making the scene feel cramped, while the bright aperture gives me more freedom when available light starts fading. Street lamps and signs retain good detail, and the natural depth of the scene makes my photos feel much closer to what I experienced in person.
For indoor photography, the 20mm focal length has been surprisingly useful. I can photograph an entire room, capture groups of people in tighter spaces, or include more of the surroundings when documenting family gatherings. Straight lines can show distortion near the edges if I position the camera carelessly, but paying attention to my angle helps keep architectural shots looking natural.
One thing I appreciate is how easily it balances on my Sony mirrorless camera. It feels solid without becoming a burden during longer walks, and the controls are straightforward to operate. Focus acquisition is quick and quiet, which is useful when recording video or photographing spontaneous moments. The manual aperture ring and its click control also give me welcome flexibility when switching between still photography and video.
Low-light performance is another strong point. The f/1.8 aperture lets me photograph indoors and outdoors at night without immediately reaching for a tripod. Background lights can create pleasing separation, and fine details remain crisp when I focus carefully. I also find the lens useful for astrophotography, where the wide field of view and bright aperture make framing the night sky much easier.
Rather than serving only one particular type of photography, it has become a versatile option for travel, landscapes, interiors, and casual video projects. The fixed focal length encourages me to move around and think more carefully about composition, which has improved how I approach certain scenes. It is not the lens I would choose for distant subjects or tight portraits, but for expansive views and everyday situations where I want plenty of surroundings in the frame, its performance has been consistently rewarding.
