Event photography is where I have appreciated this lens the most. I can start with a wider view of the room, zoom in for candid moments, and move toward tighter portraits without constantly reaching for another lens. Having that flexibility makes it easier to stay focused on what is happening around me rather than interrupting the moment to change gear.
The bright aperture makes a noticeable difference when shooting indoors or during evening gatherings. At the wider end, f/2 gives me more freedom to work with available light, while the longer focal lengths remain useful for separating a subject from a busy background. Skin tones look pleasing, and the detail is strong enough for close portraits without making every shot feel overly processed.
One thing I noticed early on is the substantial size and weight. It is not the lens I would choose for a casual all-day walk when traveling light, and holding it for extended periods can tire my wrist. On my Nikon Z body, though, the grip feels secure, and the balance is manageable when I use a comfortable camera strap. The solid construction also gives me confidence when taking it out for regular shoots.
Focusing has been dependable for portraits and moving people at gatherings. It locks onto subjects quickly in good light, and tracking keeps up well with the kind of movement I encounter at family events and outdoor sessions. I still pay attention to my shutter speed when people move unpredictably, but the lens has made it easier to catch spontaneous expressions without repeatedly adjusting my setup.
The zoom range is another practical advantage. At 35mm, I can include more of the surroundings and give a portrait some context; farther toward 150mm, I can isolate details or photograph people from a comfortable distance. I enjoy being able to change the feel of a composition simply by turning the zoom ring, especially when there is little room to move around.
Price and weight are worth considering before buying, but the versatility suits the way I photograph. Rather than carrying several lenses for portraits, events, and everyday subjects, I can cover much of my usual work with one piece of gear. It has become a reliable choice when I want strong low-light performance and plenty of framing options without frequent lens changes.
