Macro photography has become much more enjoyable with the 90mm focal length. I have been using it for flowers, small household details, and close-up shots of food, and the level of detail is impressive without making the lens difficult to handle. The working distance feels comfortable, especially when I want to photograph a subject without getting right on top of it.
Focus acquisition has been quick and dependable with my Nikon Z body. I also appreciate how easily I can switch to manual focus when I want to make a very precise adjustment at close distances. Fine details stay nicely defined, and I have found the lens dependable for both carefully composed subjects and more spontaneous close-up opportunities.
Handling has been one of my favorite parts of the experience. It feels solid in the hand without becoming cumbersome during a longer photo session. The controls are easy to reach, and the focus ring provides enough control for making small adjustments without feeling overly sensitive.
I have also used it for portraits, where the focal length gives a flattering perspective and helps separate the subject from the background. That extra versatility makes it useful beyond dedicated macro photography. In ordinary indoor lighting, it has performed well for me, and I appreciate having the option to make detailed close-ups without changing lenses.
One thing I noticed quickly is how much easier it is to notice tiny textures and details with a dedicated macro lens. Focusing carefully takes some patience at close range, but the results make that extra attention worthwhile. The lens has also been easy to incorporate into my regular Nikon Z kit rather than feeling like gear I would only bring out for special occasions.
I am very happy with how versatile and enjoyable it has been in actual use. Close-up subjects are where it stands out most for me, yet portrait sessions and everyday detail shots also feel natural with it. It has earned a permanent place in my bag because it gives me another perspective without adding unnecessary fuss to my setup.
